Blackjack is a social activity where you get involved with other players though you do not necessarily compete against them. The game has certain rituals and manners expected of everyone at the table, which includes those who are playing the game and spectators who aren't actually playing. We'll mention a few table civilities that are musts for every player.
As previously mentioned, even spectators are expected to observe certain rules of etiquette. It is quite alright to observe the action in a blackjack table. It is considered proper since people who want to learn a few tricks of the trade are welcome to do so. Now, when observing, the rule of etiquette is that you should do so at a distance so as not to distract any player.
When you're new to the game and are still learning the rules, you should look for a table with no one else playing. Sometimes casinos will reserve a few tables for new players to get along and learn and practice together. The idea is that a new player shouldn't hold up the game making up his mind what to do with the cards in his hand.
Here's a piece of etiquette that every player should do regardless if they win or lose. And that is to tip the dealer when he's really done a great job. There's no reason not to when the dealer has made the game a lot of fun for everybody. Never blame the dealer if you lose and make sure you give a tip when you win.
Another rule of etiquette you'll easily observe is that games that when the cards are dealt face up the players are not allowed to touch them, otherwise it's ok. Avoid spilling your drink on the blackjack table and don't ever get drunk while you're at it. Another really annoying thing on the table that you should avoid is to blabber and pester others for advice.
Another important part of blackjack etiquette is to know the hand signals. If cards are dealt face up you use the following hand signals: point at your cards when you hit, to stand just waive a hand over your cards, place a second bet next to the first one you made when splitting or doubling.
Now, if the cards are dealt face down you use the following hand signals: lightly scrape the table using a hand if you want to hit, place your cards under your wager if you stand, flip your cards showing the value to the dealer then make an additional bet if you either double or split.
These rules of etiquette are necessary in blackjack since you'll be dealing with people at the table. Blackjack is a social activity that will entail table civilities.
